  • Aquariums: Then and Now.

    Posted on August 1, 2007

It is said that the first aquarium keepers were the Sumerians. Early civilization first used aquariums to house the fish they would later consume. Aristotle was known to be one of the first philosophers to study fish.

Today, aquariums are used to create a dramatic element of water and living art. Aquariums are also one of the fastest growing hobbies. Some hobbyists may spend upwards of hundreds and thousands to keep the ultimate aquarium. We see aquariums just about everywhere. From our dentist and doctor’s offices, residential homes, business offices to the television and the movie set. We also see aquariums in public exhibits and educational facilities around the world.

Scientific and technological advances have allowed us to now care for aquatic life with a greater rate of success. From liquid bacterial supplements which speed up the initial cycle, synthetic sea salts, computer programs to monitor crucial water parameters and even programs to recreate moon cycles for optimum breeding conditions. Components such as filtration, lighting, and pumps have also made great improvements.

We have also seen a great wave in sustainable livestock readily available such as farm raised corals and tank raised fish.

The hobby and art of aquarium has caught up to the modern technologies of today, making fish-keeping easier and enjoyable than ever before.
